Course Description:
This assessment is competency based. There is a requirement to achieve a 100% pass mark to be deemed competent in the course.
Where the candidate has clearly answered the underpinning knowledge questions incorrectly the assessor must inform the candidate they will, within a reasonable timeframe, be required to undertake further gap training and assessment in those areas not answered correctly. Failure to respond correctly to any question means that the assessor is required to enter a result of “Not yet competent” and the candidate will not be permitted to attempt the Performance Assessment.
Course includes:
- engineer certification requirements for critical components
- training requirements for erectors and operators; and
- advice for all relevant obligation holders, checklists and verification forms to assist obligation holders to ensure safety

Performance Assessment Involves
- Aspect one: Demonstrate correct fitting and checking of safety harness to be worn on the swing stage
- As you prepare for the practical tasks you will inspect and fit the safety harness equipment used whilst working/operating a swing stage scaffold
- Aspect two: Communicate effectively and work safely with others in the work area
- As you work on the practical tasks the assessor will check that you communicate effectively and work safely with your team. This will include communication with the team during the hazard identification and control process and the safe and efficient use of signals and other communication methods related to working as a swing stage operator. Communicating with fellow operator of the swing stage scaffold
- Aspect three: Effectively apply risk assessment and hazard management procedures to safely operate a swing stage scaffold as you work on the practical tasks the assessor will check that you conduct a hazard identification assessment of the workplace prior to commencing work as part of the swing stage scaffolding operations, apply hazard prevention / controls prior to the commencement of work, maintain a safe work environment while conducting the activity and removing the hazard prevention / controls after completing the task
- Aspect four: Effectively complete the pre-operational checks, operation, and parking of a swing stage scaffold
You will be assessed on Aspects one to four simultaneously.
The suspended swing stage scaffold must be operated with an actual load including tools and equipment. Load the swing stage with a working load of at least 200kg and with the assistance of another, prepare to operate the suspended swing stage. Undertake three (3) lifts and lower the loaded, suspended swing stage, with the assistance of another operator on the other winch.
- The Code must be followed by persons erecting, modifying, dismantling or using any scaffolding
- The Code provides that any person who is erecting or installing suspended scaffold must have undertaken the course in the Safe Erection/Installation of Swing Stage Scaffolds (30825QLD) and that a user of the swing stage must have undertaken the course in the Safe Use of Swing Stage Scaffolds (30826QLD)
- This training has been developed and available to industry, it must be undertaken as soon as possible
Koolat Safety places a pre-requisite that the candidate must hold a nationally recognised “Work safely at heights” unit of competency from a National Training Package
The code must be followed along with the following four requirements:
- WHSQ SS 01 — Principal contractor or building owner swing-stage statement
- WHSQ SS 02 — Competent person benchmarks for swing-stage set-up verification
- WHSQ SS 03 — Swing-stage suspension system verification statement; and
- WHSQ SS 04 — Swing-stage load test procedure
The participant needs to be able to work at height and perform physical tasks.
The participants must also hold a current certificate of competency in Basic and Intermediate Scaffolding.
Students are to wear Steel Cap Safety Boots and appropriate PPE
Students must also bring;
- Hard hat and safety vest
- Drivers Licence or Passport (required for course registration)

- Students should have basic reading and writing skills (to be able to identify and interpret workplace signs)
