Course Description: This course is designed around the role of the Dogger, which is to:
- Plan and prepare the work
- Select the correct equipment to support the load during lifting
- Issue instructions to the crane operator on the movement and positioning of the load
- Ensure correct positioning of the load
- Remove slings and lifting accessories
- Check all equipment before and after use
40 hours of training (including a minimum of 8 hours practical training) will cover:
- The planning and preparation necessary for the performance of works associated with dogging
- The assessment and control, in the correct priority, of all occupational health and safety issues associated with dogging and associated equipment
- Understanding all relevant obligations, requirements and responsibilities as well as concepts of the duty of care associated with dogging and associated equipment
- The inspection and assembly of lifting gear to Australian Standards
- The performance of works associated with dogging in accordance with all relevant standards, legislative requirements and industry codes of practice pertinent to the area of works
Assessment:
Participants will be required to successfully complete a written and practical examination to be deemed competent. This will be conducted over approximately 8 hours and consist of:
- A theory examination consisting of 126 questions
- A written assignment consisting of 5 tasks
- A performance test consisting of 7 practical exercises
Students will be supplied with a whistle for practical exercises.
NB. Prior to completing their performance test, students are required to obtain informal training in a work environment.
This consists of students completing a log book and training plan under the supervision of a licensed person. The log book and training plan can only be undertaken once the student has completed formal training.
- Students must have a intermediate understanding of mathematics (must be able to work out formulas for loads and safe working loads of steel wire rope, synthetic rope and chains)
- While students under 18 may complete the formal training component, students must be over 18 in order to apply for their licence

- New whistle & lanyard plus doggers whistle/hand signals and formula cards (Students to keep)
- Student workbooks and dogging books
- Students are encouraged to bring their own PPE if available but can be provided by Koolat Safety if necessary. The provision of steel capped boots is the responsibility of the student. Please note that potential crane operators should have a dogging licence before attempting to obtain crane licences
- Students must bring photo identification (such as a passport or drivers licence) to register for this course
- Students should have intermediate reading and writing skills (to be able to identify and interpret workplace signs)
